Sunday August 23rd. I'm sitting at a wonderful writing spot at Sedona, AZ. The red rock formations are stunning. Before this we were at the Grand Canyon. Just inspiring. And we are moving on from here to Sierra Vista, AZ, near the Mexican border. The canyons there are a birding hotspot. We spend most of our time outdoors. The Dispatch recently had an article about the safety and benefits of being outdoors in Covid time. I am writing to express so much thankfulness from Mary and me, from Joel and Zeb. The farewell Sunday was incredibly moving to us. The words that were spoken to us collectively and personally were priceless. I feel incredible affirmation, love, and grace. Thanks for gifts given, for cards received. Thanks for the collective gift from Ascension. Taking leave of a beloved congregation is challenging. Letting go is hard. We know that friendship remains, but the working relationship has changed. I am not your pastor anymore, and it's hard to write that. I'm thankful that you will have a purposeful interim pastor. The days before and after the farewell were incredibly full. There is certainly a lot to do to move countries. We are grateful for all help received in this time. The packers packed; the movers moved. A 20 foot container is on the way to Australia. Recently we were told that Covid is not delaying shipping, so the goods that were sent should take another 7-9 weeks to arrive in Canberra. I want to give a shout out to 'Downsize with a Heart'. This is a part of the non-profit Furniture Bank. Two men and a truck came on our last day to take everything left - furniture, toys, clothes, kitchenware, etc. That was very helpful. Their truck was quite full. Mary and I both are committed to accumulate less in our new place. The book buying ban remains in force. (The city library is a block away. The Anglican Seminary is 5 miles away. We are scheduled to fly to Sydney from Los Angeles on September 4. We will let you know when we arrive in Sydney and begin quarantine.
