Forward to Spring (Lent)
I was surprised that "Lent" is an Old English word
meaning the season of spring. In that sense, I am looking forward to
Lent. (Actually most of this year's Lent will still be in the winter
season.) But Lent will lead us into spring, especially preparing us for the
journey of Holy Week and Easter.
The various traditional disciplines of Lent are to
help Christians grow in faith and love. There is the emphasis on teaching,
especially for preparing people for their baptism at Easter, and helping those
who are baptized to grow deeper.
There is growth through prayer and
meditation. Fasting has not been as popular with Lutherans, though some
see it as a time to focus on 'giving up' a habit or pattern that is getting in
the way of growth. There is growth in serving and giving, with a special
focus on caring for the poor and lonely.
Lutherans have often had the practice of extra
worship, adding in worship services on Wednesday. This worship sometimes
has had a focus on the story of Jesus' suffering and death. This year
Vicar Bob and I are going to feature various characters who make up the passion
story, trying to see the events unfolding as they may have seen them. (I'm
looking forward to doing some research.)
My prayer is that Lent will be a rich time for
you, a time to do some reflection on the story of Jesus, and your own life, and
to grow. Then we will be better prepared for the deep journey of Holy
Week and Easter.
Jesus' peace to you,
Pastor Tim.
