This is certainly the most difficult Chi Rho article I've written in the past 11 months; it is also the final submission as vicar at Ascension Lutheran. It hardly seems possible. With that stated, allow me to thank you for some of the many gifts you've bestowed upon Wanetta and me.
One of these gifts is that of hospitality, which has blossomed into friendship. How we have been embraced by your hearts, handshakes, and hugs. I am reminded of Mary who so tenderly washed the feet of Jesus with her tears, then wiping his feet with her hair. What a servant she was - what servants you are. Never lose sight of the importance of welcoming the next stranger who comes across the church's threshold with that same kind of love.
I think about the gift of the marvelous cross which extends directly above the altar where the Word is read and the Meal is served. It is a meal that is free for all who come forward, yet one which none of us can afford. It's the one Jesus paid for - with his life.
You have presented the gift of "affirmation of call." With virtually every week that sprinted by, I felt more of a confirmation within me that becoming a minister of Word and Sacrament is where I need to be for the rest of my life. Leaving children and grandchildren, a home we loved, plus a career I worked at in excess of 30 years has been a challenge to say the least; however, thanks to you, those feelings and thoughts have been lessened considerably.
The biggest gift so freely given has been the gift of self, and in turn, selflessness. You may be thinking, "Isn't that what Christians are supposed to do?" Well - yes; however, if words are not put into actions, then…they're just words. Let others continue to see Jesus in you. Yes, continue to be Jesus to others! The light of Jesus in a world which has so much darkness is a sight to encourage those to finally allow Jesus to help them walk thru their individual valleys. From there they'll feel the touch of Jesus help them climb whatever oppressive slope they're encountering, finally reaching the summit. It's because of the precious gift of self which you've shared.
I wish I could thank each of you individually for having blessed and enriched my life so greatly. You have left a footprint of Jesus' love upon my heart which will remain with me and my ministry always. May God continue to bless this wonderful ministry. Go in peace - serve the Lord. Vicar Bob
